Syracuse murals - a conversation muralist Ally Walker

Here in Syracuse, NY, we’re fortunate to have a lot of public art, in the form of murals.

When you look closely, you’ll see many of these installations are by local artist and graphic designer Ally Walker.

I put together a fun highlight reel with some of my favorite images with Ally’s murals as backdrops.

I reached out to Ally for an informal interview and loved getting to know more about her and her work.

When and where did you create your first public mural?

Ally: For Crouse Hospital, I painted their underground tunnel from Irving parking garage entrance to the hospital, while their “new” front door entrance was being remodeled. 90ft x 7ft both sides of tunnel. (2007)

How did your murals in Armory Square come to be?

Ally: Mike and Angela Flynn (The Roofing Guys) bought the building and had a great idea to get more families and people back downtown.

They hired me and we collaborated to create an “art walk” inviting viewers to interact with the art, and “active” the wall through movement/photography.

These murals in particular, appear to be designed specifically as photo backdrops. How did you choose the themes & designs?

Ally: The owners and I collaborated on specifically family friendly themes, with bright colors and fun interactive designs. We wanted all ages to have fun with the wall.

Do you have any fun stories from this mural?

Ally: I am a huge fan of “The Office” so it was great to see Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute actor) interacting with the art!

He was filming in syracuse and would run the creek walk in the early mornings. I didn’t get to meet him while I was painting but he posted a fun photo to his Instagram!

Has this installation surprised you in any way?

Ally: I am so happy to see people posing and having fun with the art.

It really activates the space and encourages people to take a walk through downtown.

I am surprised by all the fun poses, it keeps reinventing the art through photos.

Do you market your mural services? If so, what’s your favorite way of marketing?

Ally: I do! Mostly through Instagram, and freelanced.com.

For Instagram I really enjoy seeing people interact with my murals and finding new and interesting ways to recreate their own art. I love to be able to display those photos.

Alice: Makes total sense! Instagram is such a great platform for artists!

What’s the best way for people to connect with you, if they want to commission your work?

Ally: Email!

I love to hear and work on fun new and exciting projects! Even just a corner area or alley way, etc., murals can brighten a space and provoke people to look at an overlooked area in new and interesting ways.
